UNIT 13: FINAL MAJOR PROJECT -PILGRIM 2045

PROPOSAL

RATIONALE

Around this second year of the college, I learned about graphic novels and comics, has really developed my understanding of how storytelling can be visual and immersive. I've discovered that comics aren't about the art, they're a perfect blend of visual storytelling and scripted narrative, where every panel, colour choice, and layout serve a purpose.

And this second year of the college, I've learned about concept and that topic that I'm doing for final major project is art style like example of Scott Pilgrim, it has given me a whole new depth. I understood how much depth and difficulty there is behind it. It's interesting how everything ties together, and how understanding this can change the way I approach related topics. I've grown a better understanding of how this idea works in practice and how it can be related in different situations.

And, this second year of the college, I've learned that audience analysis in comics is key to creating characters, storylines, and visuals that resonate with readers. By understanding the demographics, interests, and preferences of the audience, creators can design stories that connect emotionally, whether through humour, action, or deep themes. Knowing the audience also helps shape the tone, pacing, and style of the comic to keep readers engaged and invest

For this final major project, I define myself as a digital artist because I have the power to experiment and make limits in ways that traditional art forms sometimes can't. The digital space moves endless options to layer, manipulate, and transform my ideas. Every project is an opportunity to break new ground in my artistic expression.

I will use Photoshop's brush tools to sketch out initial concepts and ideas for characters, environments, or any other visual assets. The power of Photoshop's brushes allows me to work quickly and refine sketches with ease, experimenting with different styles and techniques.

I will design and create digital assets, such as characters, environments, objects, and textures, which will be used in the final product. These assets will be crafted with attention to detail, ensuring that they align with the project's style and specifications and for digital media.

CONCEPT

As a digital artist for this project, I plan to do is extend my knowledge of various digital art software like Adobe Photoshop. I'll explore new tools and techniques through tutorials and practice and experimenting with brushes, layers, and texturing will allow me to understand the full potential of the software.

In my concept for the future of Scott Pilgrim, my primary focus is on evolving the original artwork and building on Bryan Lee O'Malley's iconic visual style by blending expressive character design, bold comic layouts, and modern influences like glitch art, retro-futurism, and animation aesthetics to create a fresh, emotionally driven visual experience that honours the original while pushing it into a new era.

I want to improve my skills in digital painting, learning techniques like blending, texture creation, and relating different brushes to match fixed modes and this will help me develop more natural and immersive pieces. I'll practice painting characters and shots to refine my technique.

I'll focus on studying the relationships between colours, how bright interacts with objects, and how to create bond and gap in my masterpieces. I plan to research stylized digital paintings and background techniques and ways to tell stories through my artwork and creating logos that involves with both traditional and digital artists.

I would like to grow my skills in creating concept art that connects not only the visual aesthetics but also the mood, atmosphere, and narrative behind a scene or character. This involves working on thumbnails, compositions, and good techniques to express ideas. I would like to be able to adapt to different art styles depending on the project.

I'd like to improve my skills in digital shots, for animations, comics, and visual narratives. Shot involves turning ideas into visual sequences, and I want to develop this skill to carry emotion, action, and timing through a sequence of images.

For my Photoshop, my products will be a series of digital illustrations, series of digital art piece like a comic strip, GIF and characters and digital poster inspired by the future style of Scott Pilgrim.

EVALUATION

I will evaluate my personal development by reflect the tools and software I have learned and how they have increased my work and assess how my artistic style has evolved with artistic expression. It helps me to building my attendance, sharing my work, and engaging with audience. I will gain insights into my artistic progress, celebrate achievements, and stay motivated to grow as a digital artist.

By continuously seeking, processing, and applying feedback, I will ensure that I am growing as a digital artist while staying motivated and open to new learning opportunities and how well I apply their advice and whether it enhances my artistic development.

RESEARCH AND EXPLANATION OF DOING THIS PROJECT

TARGET AUDIENCE - What will I research?

I will research how to create a design concept in Photoshop. I want to learn how to use tools like brushes, layers, and colours to build bold, expressive artwork. I'll look into what makes a great graphic novel poster and comic strip shot like in Scott Pilgrim because they use strong visuals, action, and fun layouts to tell a story and grab attention. My target audience is mainly people aged 12 to 20 who enjoy comics, anime, gaming, and creative pop culture.

EXPLAIN: Creating Conceptual Art and Art Style in Photoshop:

•I'm creating conceptual art with Photoshop because it allows me to transform my ideas into visual stories. Concept art is a form of illustration meant to convey an idea, atmosphere, and design before it's realized in its final form. Using Photoshop, I can experiment with different elements, like textures and lighting, to bring these ideas to life.

•Photoshop gives me the ability to work with images in ways that other tools can't. I can play around with textures, lighting, and different elements to turn a simple idea or photo into something more interesting and unique. It lets me layer things together, adding depth and meaning to my work as I go.

EXPLAIN: Doing and Designing Scott Pilgrim's style in Photoshop

•Photoshop helps me bring the energy and quirky vibe of Scott Pilgrim to life in a way that's fun and visually dynamic. I can take simple ideas, like comic-style graphics or character designs, and build them into something unique by experimenting with textures, colours, and lighting. I can layer elements to give depth and play around with the style until it matches the creative spirit of the Scott Pilgrim world.

•Details: How are I going to make my project suitable for 12 – 22 years olds?

•I'm designing Pilgrim 2045 and planned it to be suitable for 12–22-year-olds by focusing on identity, friendship, and emotional growth and those things that can be matter to teens and young adults and the story will be shared and visual-first, told through formats they already love like webcomics, short videos, and immersive worldbuilding. It keeps the spirit of Scott Pilgrim and reimagined for a generation that grew up in a more digital, fast-changing world and this includes while staying age-appropriate.

12-22 Years Olds

Research: Graphic Novel Posters : What makes a great poster?

A great graphic novel poster for ages 12-22 should grab attention with bold, vibrant visuals and feature characters that feel relatable or aspirational. It should give a clear sense of the story's vibe, whether it's action-packed, mysterious, or dramatic, while keeping text to a minimum. The design should reflect modern trends, using cool aesthetics that speak to the target audience, and include key symbols or themes from the story and it should make anyone curious, excited, and ready to dive into the graphic novel.

CASE STUDIES OF SCOTT PILGRIM

PAST OF SCOTT PILGRIM: COMICS

The cover of Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life shows a lot about the comic just from the way it looks. It has Scott standing in a confident pose with a big smile, which shows his fun and carefree personality. The artwork is bold and simple, and the bright colours like yellow and orange make the cover stand out. The title is written in a big, blocky font that feels playful and matches the comic's fun and energetic style.

Sound effects like "KRAK" and "WHAM" are integrated into the artwork, adding a video game-like energy that matches the story's surreal battles.

Different colours:

The comic uses a black-and-white manga-influenced style, with clean, thick lines and expressive character designs. The layout is fast-paced and full of movement, using exaggerated reactions and motion lines to show action and emotion. O'Malley breaks panel borders to add energy and humour, often mimicking video game menus, sound effects, or screen transitions.

The character design in Scott Pilgrim, created by Bryan Lee O'Malley, is one of the most recognizable and appealing parts of the series and is simple and effective at showing each person's personality. Bryan Lee O'Malley uses a unique blend of Western comic style and Japanese manga influences. The drawings aren't super realistic, but they use big eyes, strong expressions, and bold lines to make emotions and actions really clear. The designs are influenced by anime and video games, which adds to the fun, energetic feel of the comic and the character design helps tell the story without needing a lot of words and it shows you who the characters are just by how they look. This blend gives the comic a unique visual identity that stands out from other graphic novels.

In Scott Pilgrim, the comic uses different types of shots to make the story exciting and clear. Close-ups show characters' feelings, while wide shots show action scenes or groups. The panels often change shape or size during fights to make the scenes feel fast and dramatic. This way of using shots makes reading the comic feel like watching a cool movie or playing a video game. O'Malley uses colour in panel composition and storytelling to set mood, highlight action, or create visual impact.

PRESENT OF SCOTT PILGRIM: FILM & TV SERIES

Film - Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

The Scott Pilgrim movie uses quick cuts and comic book effects like words on the screen and split panels to copy the feeling of the comics. The director, Edgar Wright, mixes video game and cartoon styles with movie scenes, making fights and action feel exciting and fun. These special effects help the movie keep the same playful energy as the original comics and make it look very different from regular films.

Turning Scott Pilgrim from a long comic series into a 112 minutes movie meant some parts had to be shortened or changed. The film still has the same mix of funny moments, romance, and action, but some fans think it lost some of the characters' stories. Even so, the movie adds new things like music and cool visuals, showing how stories can change when they move from one type of media to another.

Series - Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

The Scott Pilgrim Takes Off  TV series brings the story to life in a new way by combining animation with live-action elements. The show keeps the same mix of humour, romance, and video game style from the comics and movie but adds new scenes and deeper character moments. The animation style is colourful and smooth, making it easy to follow and fun to watch. By spreading the story across episodes, the series can explore characters and relationships more than the movie could.

COMPARING MY DESIGNS

SHOTS

DIFFERENCES:

My versions of Scott Pilgrim were different from the original of Netflix Series (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off) in a few ways. The biggest change is the perfect style, and the original is very comic-like with flat colours and semi- bold outlines while mine is more detailed and uses lighting textures to look more modern and I changed the setting by replacing the characters and poses and changing colours and my big difference in Photoshop was using digital tools to add different effects.

COMIC COVER:

DIFFERENCES:

In my version, I kept more fun style and I added more detail in Photoshop and I changed the background to look more futuristic with lighting and textures. I made Travis Pilgrim to look different than Scott Pilgrim and my design feels more mature for the cover and I wanted the font to still feel connected to that style but look more modern and futuristic since my design shows the character in the future and I used the font that's bold but more sleek and with a glow and metallic look to match the setting and I made sure it was easy to read and stood against the background.

CHARACTER DESIGN

DIFFERENCES:

For my design, I chose cooler tones like (blues, purples and yellows) to give it more mature look and I gave the characters some different colours for their hairs so they won't be similar with OG Characters and I wanted the colours to match the mood with new beginning of Scott Pilgrim and the colours changes helped show that is a new version of the story, set in the future.

REFLECTION JOURNAL

Beginning, Middle & End – Late March & April 2025 - (Final Major Project)

28/03/2025

I began to do Unit 13 by started doing the proposal for my Final Major Project that was filled with Rationale, Evaluation, Project concept, Proposed Research Sources and Action Planning and Final Major Project was Pilgrim 2045, and it was made up for a new chapter of Scott Pilgrim Series and I learned about how to achieve my project by giving more ideas and developments and my next exercise was add more details for my proposal like what's so important of doing the skills for my project around my passion and in Photoshop and in my proposal, I wanted to do some art work and always wanted to be an artist because I'm passion with art work.

01/04/2025

I created a logo for my project (Pilgrim 2045) and about the logo, the fonts were original logo and Gotham Bold, and my decision was making it great with different fonts that can make my title feel great and my next step was doing settings for my project and making changes in my proposal.

I created settings for my project (Pilgrim 2045) by adding characters that I chose, and my decision was to do it on PowerPoint and around the slides like giving synopsis, character details and giving theories from the research for my project and my changes was between ages to because when I put down Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers' ages, I felt like putting their future age can be old for those characters after the drama events of the evil exes. My next exercise was to continue making new characters and that next exercise can show the audience how my project can relate to Scott Pilgrim's era by adding new concepts.

02/04/2025

After the response about my proposal from the tutor, I started again with same filling details (Rationale, Evaluation, Project concept, Proposed Research Sources and Action Planning) and my decision was a good idea to replace words that includes with my proposal. I learned to understand more inspirations and the lessons that I achieved from the units and what style that I want to do and I'm good at and what kind of person that I achieve to be for the project.

23/04/2025

I started to making research plan in PowerPoint and I got guidance from the tutor to find a website that make references, and the website was MyBib, and I learned about that plan can add to my proposal. My decision was after my designs, I'll start researching for my project so I could add them to my settings of my project. My next exercise was to focus my project because I want to design my passion.

I began to design characters that I chose for my project in Photoshop with a graphic tablet, and I designed characters like Travis Pilgrim, Milly Hills and Miguel Patel and my decision was changing hair colours because I wanted my characters could be different from the OGs characters of Scott Pilgrim and I learned about how to draw the same faces as it was in the comic books and my next step was making shots from comic strips and while using Photoshop, it was too easy to use graphic tablets to improve my achievement for my project.

30/04/2025

I started to design animation shots of my project (Pilgrim 2045) in Photoshop , and before that, I learned from the internet and seeing the shots from comic strips of Scott Pilgrim and found it very interesting for my project because it makes to impress the audience with my artwork and while using Photoshop it was too easy again to use a graphic tablet and the drawing was adapted by Scott Pilgrim Takes Off animated Netflix series (2023) and my decision was changing colours around my background because I was struggling of making perfect position for the colours to make perfect for my shot. My next steps were making more characters and needing help from tutor by making gif for my project.

Beginning, Middle & End – May 2025 - (Final Major Project)

01/05/2025

I started to add more stuff in my reflection journal for what I've done around last week of April, and it was easy to achieve my goals for my project and my feelings was great because it gave good developments for my reflection journal and my decisions were adding more words to explain for what I've done in my project and I'm happy with my next step is making gif for my project.

02/05/2025

I started doing gif for my project in Photoshop and I was introduced by Create Frame Animation and I started with each of two characters and characters were Travis Pilgrim and Milly Hills and it was perfect with a graphic tablet and also with fonts that included to my GIF and I used one font and the font was Kong text and that font was perfect and I'm happy of putting fonts to my work because it made me more successful with my project and my next step was continuing GIF for my project.

07/05/2025

I was continuing of doing gif for my project in Photoshop and  I added some colours for my background like green, red, blue and black so it could be different while doing GIF and it was too easy by creating frame animation and  I got an advice from my tutor of how to export and render video and putting them to mp4 and after that, it was weird because while I was playing my GIF, It won't save repeat after that. My feelings were weird because it won't save repeat, and My thoughts was getting help with my tutor so I could save my gif with repeat automatically and my next step was doing more research and doing more gif in my project in Photoshop.

08/05/2025

At home, I started to use ChatGPT as a tool to help of how to target audience for my project and it helped me to solve of giving tween audience my style. My feelings were obvious because sometimes I get confused for what I'm researching for this project and my thoughts were getting an advice from the tutor and looking more from the internet to improve my plan for my project My next step was continuing finding how to target audience and make changes to my settings of my project.

Image of the Instructions:

10/05/2025

At home, I started to add more stuff to my journal and researching for target audience and it helped me to show more development about my project and my changes were changing research websites on my research plan in PowerPoint because I can't find some websites that relates to my project and I learned about how to research websites properly and my feelings were good because doing at home gave me more time to catch up my work and it went well by giving more process to my journal and my next step was to add more stuff to my journal and doing more gif in my project.

At home, I continued to research of what's great about making an engaging poster and novel strip shot and ChatGPT as a tool helped me to find some websites that relates to my research so I could put them in my own words and I learned about how the audience of age 12-22 wanted my style to be and my feelings were okay because it helped me to give my process for my project and my next step was to making poster of my project and catch up writing for what I've done for this project.

Image of the Instructions:

10/05/2025

In PowerPoint, I started to change characters for my project, and the changes were deleting Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers because I wanted to focus on Travis Pilgrim (the son of Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers), and it was my decision and my feelings were calm. My next step was to catch up writing for what I've done for this project.

I created form about my concept, and it was revealing to be primary research, and my changes was making questions about tones and themes because it will show the audience how my concept can get a real feeling, and I got 3 responses and I thought it was enough for me because it was part of primary research that I chose for my project and I learned that audience could get to know about my project and my next steps were to make a poster and continuing my project.

14/05/2025

I created a poster of my project in Photoshop with a graphic tablet, and I designed a background with lining and colour elements and my changes were changing fonts and colour lines and outlines for my logo of Pilgrim 2045 and outlines gave me some main points and supporting details for the layout. My feelings were good, and my next steps were finishing GIFs for my project and portfolio.

16/05/2025

I finished character design in Photoshop with a graphic tablet and the design was Dylan Diaz and I filled the character with full colour elements like as normal people colours and my decision was to draw a normal anime of Scott Pilgrim and my feelings were good because it gave me a change to finish my project and make a gif that I added to my proposal and my next step was to finish my final writing and gif in Photoshop.

I created some new Forms in Microsoft for my project and I made features of what's favourites or etc and I got 2 responses from each of the them and my improvement was too do it early.

I finished doing gifs in Photoshop for my project and gifs were Patel Twins and Dylan Diaz and I filled in with different backgrounds and outlines and those were my decisions and it helped me to improve my project. The problem was not send it to Portfolio. So right now, I won't do GIF anymore so I just done a video for the characters.

07/06/2025

I researched case studies about Scott Pilgrim, including the comic, the film, and the TV series. I found it really interesting how the characters were designed with such strong personalities and unique styles. I liked how the artist used bold lines, simple shapes, and expressive faces to show emotion in a clear and fun way and I also enjoyed learning about how colour and layout were used on the comic covers to catch attention and tell a story without words.

EVALUTION #2

I produced a digital concept artwork in Photoshop imagining the future of Scott Pilgrim. I used layering, custom brushes and colour techniques to reflect a shift in tone while staying true to the comic's original visual style and the final product was a poster for the project. My work shows different characters with good designs.

In primary research, I did some surveys for my classmates to find out what people think about my artwork like does it need improvements for my designs, and this helped me understand what classmates might want to see and made my artwork more realistic and interesting.

In secondary research, I started to look up information of Scott Pilgrim artwork and the research helped me get ideas and improve my skills so I could create a stronger and more realistic future version of Scott Pilgrim.

The artwork because I managed to mix colour vibe that which made the piece feel fresh. Using Photoshop tools worked out well because I was able to layer different elements and play with colours to make the lighting and mood stand out and the details, I added with brushes helped make the image feel more alive. It made me try to keep the comic's fun and epic style and bringing more maturity and giving more balance and I'm proud of making a background so smoothly by adding more atmosphere without distracting, which helps tell the story of a new world. I paid attention to the colour palette, choosing bold, contrasting colours that matched the comic's energetic vibe and with a slightly more tone.

The feedback I got from the classmates was encouraging and they told me the characters felt like natural evolution and that the futuristic setting made sense with the artwork I wanted to show and that helped me feel confident that my design choices worked. I agree with the feedback.

TRYING DIFFERENT:

I might try different colour schemes to see which one fits mood best and I'd practice using some Photoshop tools, so the effects look smoother and cleaner.

MY WISHING LIST:

- Having more time to add details to my artwork

- Including more characters into my design like Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers

- Practicing more with Photoshop before starting so I could use more advanced tools and effects

- More research so it could help me feel more confident in my choices.

- Doing GIFs in Adobe Premiere Pro instead of putting them into videos in a last minute.
